Cases/Treatments

Wheat allergy/Gluten Allergy/Coeliac disease

There are three different terms used in the cases of wheat allergy: these are wheat allergy, gluten allergy and celiac disease. But all the three terms are different and have different meanings. People who are allergic to wheat usually tolerate other grains. However, about 20 percent of children with wheat allergy also are allergic to other grains. Be sure to ask your doctor whether foods containing barley, rye, or oats are safe for you or your child to eat.

  • What Is Wheat Allergy?

The body’s immune system believes that the wheat is harmful to the body causing antibody to fight the wheat protein. This allergy is specific for wheat only where as patients suffering from gluten allergy, are allergic to wheat as well as other grains which contain gluten.

  • What Is a Gluten Allergy?

People who cannot tolerate gluten suffer from Gluten allergy. Gluten is a protein occurring naturally in wheat, barley, rye and oats (presence of gluten in oats is still under scrutiny ). While a person with a gluten sensitivity cannot eat any food containing wheat, a person with wheat allergy may be able to eat certain grains or proteins. Unfortunately, a person could have both a wheat allergy and Celiac disease.

  • What Is a Coeliac Disease?

Celiac Disease is a genetic condition. When a person with Celiac Disease eats the food with gluten, it sets off an autoimmune reaction in their small intestines. This reaction produces antibodies, which attack the intestines and can cause damage.

  • What happens when a patient suffering from this disease eats gluten?

People with healthy digestive systems can eat gluten without any problems. The food is broken down in the stomach and passes through the small intestine where projections called villi absorb nutrients. When a celiac eats gluten in foods, their intestine thinks, it’s under attack from a foreign body and creates an immune response to the invader. The lining of the intestine becomes inflamed and the villi flatten. The flattening of the villi means that their surface area is reduced and the nutrients vital to health therefore aren’t absorbed, which over time leads to weight loss, anaemia, wasting and malnutrition.

  • What is the cause?

Coeliac disease is caused by a reaction to gliadin, a prolamin (gluten protein) found in wheat, and similar proteins found in the crops of the tribe Triticeae (which includes other common grains such as barley and rye). Other cereals such as maize, millet, sorghum, rice, and wild rice are considered safe for people with coeliac to consume but there are cases which are sensitive to these cereals also. This is because of the reason that some cereals are grown in the same fields where wheat is grown..

  • What are the Symptoms?

Diarrhoea
Weight loss
Retarded growth
Anaemia
Tiredness
Bloating
Skin eruptions
Ulcers in mouth
Vomiting
Migraine
Psychological issues like depression, stress etc.

  • How is it Diagnosed?

Ttg or IgA, are the blood tests done for the diagnosis of gluten intolerance, or Celiac Disease. The test will be used to search for particular antibodies that only show up in people with Celiac Disease. A doctor may also want to do a biopsy of the intestines to verify the diagnosis. Blood tests can be used to pinpoint celiac disease, but final diagnosis is done by biopsy of a small piece of villi from the small intestine. Microscopic examination will confirm whether celiac disease is present or not.

  • What Diet is to be Followed?

A person with a wheat allergy has to avoid all foods that contain wheat. Gluten is found in wheat, rye and barley. People who are diagnosed with Celiac Disease are unable to eat the foods containing any of these proteins.

  • Treatments

In allopathic system, no medications can cure wheat allergy. A doctor may advise you to take medication to treat the symptoms. Antihistamines may help reduce symptoms. For more severe cases, a doctor may ask you to carry Epinephrine, which will help if a person’s throat begins to swell after eating wheat. In cases where Hb is low, iron, folic acid, multivitamins etc are given, But they advise not to eat wheat for one’s whole life.

In Homoeopathic system of medicine, I have been working on this project since 2003 and I have seen wonderful cures with homoeopathic medicines. For last 10-11 years I have been treating such patients with a lot of success. I have gathered a number of reports before, during and after treatment. I think homoeopathic medicines do excessively well with allergic patients.

It is advised not to take any medicine on your own by reading the treated cases.
